Foundations of Leadership

Research shows that the transition from the role of individual contributor to the first management position is one of the most challenging stages in a manager's career. Successful managers learn early in their careers how to effectively manage and motivate their employees without micromanaging.  They also develop the ability to identify and take into account the individual differences of their employees.

Foundations of Leadership (FOL), addresses this challenging and critical stage of the new manager's develop skills for supervising and motivating individuals, for managing and delegating work effectively all in the context of the organization's current management policies and practices.  The FOL program begins focused on developing leadership skills that increase the frequency and quality of performance and development conversations between managers and the people they lead.  Participants learn a comprehensive and practical method for effectively leading and developing high performers.

Applying this developmental style of leading and managing, FOL participants learn the key principles underlying the organization's policies and practices and how to consider these policies and practices in day-to-day decision making and interactions with others.  Working in small groups FOL participants practice making management decisions in a safe environment that models how successful leaders operate.  Participants discuss and practice handling a variety of critical and challenging situations, such as setting expectations, monitoring performance, providing feedback, rewarding performance and managing contracted employees appropriately.
